Shuanglin Temple

The Shuanlin Temple started construction in the early years of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534AD), situated just 97 kilometers from Taiyuan, near northern Qiaotou Village, and most of the buildings were renovated during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In Chinese, Shuang means two or double, and Lin, forest. The Shuanlin Temple got its name from a Buddhist story. According to the Buddhist sutra, Sakyamuni who was the founder of Buddhism, entered nirvana under two trees; Hence, its name Shuanglin, reputed to be the 'ancient painted sculptures museum'.
The Shuanlin Temple boosts 2,050 colored statues from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, making it one of the reputed art exhibitions in China. The Shuanglin Temple was included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO as an important cultural site of Ping Yao City in 1997.
