Trip Highlights - As the second largest city in Shanxi Province, Datong is situated in the far north, near the border with Inner Mongolia, a 6-hour train ride or 5-hour drive from Beijing. Datong had a grand past ss the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Highlights in and around Datong includes Yungang Cave, one of the three cave clusters in China, the Hanging Monastery, which was built into a near vertical rock and suspended by no more than a few wooden beams. Tour Itinerary
Day 1:Beijing/Datong
You will leave Beijing and travel a full day to get to Datong.
Day 2:Datong (B/L/D)
Our dedicated local guide will be waiting to collect you at the train station, then will take you for breakfast. After this the tour begins with a trip to the Wooden Pagoda in Fogong Temple. It is called the wooden pagoda because it was built entirely of timber. It is the tallest of all the ancient wooden buildings. In the afternoon you will visit the amazing Hanging Temple.

Day 3:Datong/Beijing (B/L)
In the morning you will make a tour of the areas most famous tourist attractions the Yungang Caves, Datong Nine Dragon Wall and Jiuhua Temple. After this you will be returned to the train station for your journey back to Beijing, where you will then be returned to your hotel.

The Huayan Monastery is one of the only preserved monasteries from the Liao period. The name comes from the Huayan school of Buddhist teaching. In 1122, the monastery was destroyed, yet it was not long after a new building was built to replace the old.
The Nine Dragon Wall in Datong is only one of 3 traditional Nine Dragon Walls in China, with the other two located in Beijing. The one located in Datong city is also the largest in the country at 3.5 meters tall, 45 meters long and 2 meters thick.
The Yungang Buddhist Caves are located at Wuzhou Mountain, just west of Datong. These caves stretch for one kilometer across the mountain and are found among the cliffsides. The excavation of the caves took place from 460 AD to 524 AD, the reigns of Emperor Wen Cheng and Xiao Ming.
