Yungang Buddhist Caves are located at Wuzhou Mountain, just west of Datong. These caves stretch for one kilometer across the mountain and are found among the cliffsides. The excavation of the caves took place from 460 AD to 524 AD, the reigns of Emperor Wen Cheng and Xiao Ming.
Huayan Monastery is one of the only preserved monasteries from the Liao period. The name comes from the Huayan school of Buddhist teaching. In 1122, the monastery was destroyed, yet it was not long after a new building was built to replace the old.
