Trip Highlights - The Hakka Tulou tour takes you to the famous Hakka Earth House in Yongding, the most extraordinary type of Chinese rural dwellings of the Hakka built in the middle age. In the mountainous areas in the western part of Fujian, there are numbers of earth buildings, either round or square. The architectural structure, carvings, pillar couplets of these dwelling houses reflect the wisdom and creativeness of the Hakkas. After more than 1,000 years of struggle they formed their original folk customs in their residential buildings such as their food, drink, dressing, education and religion. These large, circular buildings resemble fortresses and were probably designed for defence.

Here you will visit Hong Keng Village, famous for its tulous, circular, square and rectangular houses. The round Hakka tulou were built without nails, using mud bricks and wood. They were built according to a Chinese "ba gua" method of round on the outside, octagonal on the inside. After this visit you have lunch and then driven back to Xiamen and your hotel.
(Service End)
The Hakka Tulous are round and built using only mud bricks and wood. The Tulous are able to retain heat in the winter months and keep cool in the summer. There were built according to the 'ba gua' style - round on the outside and octagonal on the inside. Due to its architecture, the tulous are no more than 5 stories tall; however, the curve of the outside helps the rain slide off from the top. The thickness of the walls also maintains the sturdiness of the structure. These ancient houses are one style of architecture that is unique in China and a great tourist destination.
