Jiayuguan Travel Guide
Jiayuguan, a recently developing industrial city of iron-steel production, is located in the middle of Hexi Corridor, Gansu Province. Historically, a small township engaged in local trading, catering to the needs of the military garrisons stationed at the fort; as a Han outpost and in 1372, during the Ming Dynasty, a fortress was built to protect the last frontier of the Chinese empire. However, you can still find things to do in Juyong. There are a few historical sites of very special interest, including the pass itself, Jiayuguan. The Jiayuguan Fort, 5km southwest of the city, is generally acknowledged to be the western end of the snaking Great Wall. Also known as the “Impregnable Defile under the Heaven”, the fort has been crowned as the best in China due to its perilous and bleak location. There are also the stunning landscapes of the Jiayu Highlands and the strange, moon-like, blackened-stone surfaces of parts of the Gobi Desert beyond. First beacon Tower, Overhanging Great Wall, Heishan rock carvings, brick-painted graves of Wei and Jin periods as well as Qiyi Glacier and other natural scenes… are great things to see as well.
