Napa Lake
Napa Lake is situated in northwestern Yunnan province, just 8 km north of Zhongdian County, surrounded by grasslands as well as many species of birds including the black necked cranes. These kinds of birds only number around 6,000 due to change in habitat and agricultural practices, but they are abounding in the reserve during the winter. During the rainy season, the Napa Lake expands and the water will rush through the nine holes and empty into the Jinsha River. The local guide suggests the best time to visit Napa Lake is summer and autumn.
During the dry season, the water recedes and grassland appears. Napa Lake becomes meadow in the beginning of summer. In autumn, the prairie changes into a golden color and flocks of yaks, horses, sheep graze there. During the winter especially, the reserve is home to a large number of water fowl, many of which enjoy either state or provincial protection.
