Hukka Tulou
The Hukka Tulous are round on the outside and octagonal on the inside and built using only mud bricks and wood. The Hukka Tulous are able to retain heat in the winter months and keep cool in the summer. Due to its architecture, the Hukka Tulous are no more than 5 stories tall; however, the curve of the outside helps the rain slide off from the top. The thickness of the walls also maintains the sturdiness of the structure. These ancient houses are one style of architecture that is unique in China and a great tourist destination.
What is amazing about these earth buildings is the fact that in spite of the earth wall, some of them are more than 700 years old, surviving through centuries of natural elements, including earthquakes, yet still standing solid.
