Hulunbuir Prefecture
Hailar is the largest city in the Hulunbuir Prefecture and located in the northern area of Inner Mongolia. The city is known for its diverse population and a center for wandering herdsmen. The city is home to rolling grasslands that add to the beauty of the area. In the city, there are 25 different minority groups that live here, including Mongol, Koreans, Daur and Hui. On the outer areas of the city, one can find Hulun Lake and small towns such as Manzhouli that are filled with Russian traders. The northern areas of the city one can find some of the best camping areas in China.
Hulunbuir boasts natural grasslands of 80,000 square kilometers (30,888 square miles), natural woodland of 120,000 square kilometers (46,332 square miles), and more than 3,000 rivers and 500 lakes. The Daxing Anling Range (Greater Khingan Range, China’s largest forest zone) stretches through Hulunbuir from north to south. The famous Hulunbuir Grassland, with a total area of 93,000 square kilometers (35,908 square miles), is one of the largest and best-preserved grasslands in the world. The endless grassland is like a giant carpet of green, dotted with white yurts, herds of cattle and sheep, and winding rivers and lakes. Visitors can try many activities. They can roam around riding horses, camels or grassland carts. Or they can paddle a boat and angle on the lakes, or hunt nearby.
